Simon Gudgeon's monumental work stands in Hyde Park, in His Majesty The King's garden at Highgrove, and in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming.
His bronzes are refined until only spirit and movement remain. His steel figures are open lattices that merely outline the body, offering no detail and inviting you to complete them. It is what he leaves out that draws you in.
Alongside the monumental pieces are smaller works made for quieter spaces. All of it can be seen at Sculpture by the Lakes, near Dorchester.
I begin with an idea, often a shape, form or a movement drawn from nature, and refine it in my mind until it is fully formed. Small adjustments often arise along the way, yet the sculpture itself is clear before the first mark is made.
